Technology Overview

Clinical studies have shown that early-stage Parkinson's disease, infectious diseases, brain trauma, and neurodegenerative disorders are often associated with olfactory dysfunction or loss. However, current olfactory assessment methods mainly rely on subjective tools such as odor tubes, smell cards, and questionnaires, lacking objective and quantitative diagnostic measures.
ITRI has pioneered the Intranasal Optical Coherence Tomography System, integrating endoscopy with Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) to provide high-resolution tomographic images of the olfactory mucosal epithelium. This system features a flexible OCT probe with an outer diameter of just 0.8 mm, guided by an ENT endoscope to easily access the upper turbinate area and visualize the microstructure of the olfactory epithelium.
