On-Chip AC LED Lighting Technology

ITRI's On-Chip AC LED Lighting Technology won the 2008 R&D 100 Awards. The lighting technology allows AC to directly drive the LED chip for lighting without the need for a DC to AC adaptor, thus saving the 15~30% power consumption. Benefits include energy saving, carbon reduction and improved overall LED illumination efficiency. It was developed from a simple concept of directly using AC power, and replacing the DC used in traditional LEDs.

The micro-diodes used in AC LED chips eliminate the need for a power converter, which also greatly reduce the size and weight of a normal LED lighting fixture. This makes the LED lights both more flexible and longer-lasting than traditional lighting. At the same time, the hot swapping design offers a breakthrough in packaging limitations of LEDs and reduces thermal contact resistance.

AC LEDs increase the convenience of LED lighting sources and bring greater potential for further LED application in general. In addition to achieving these research breakthroughs, ITRI has also established a valuable patent portfolio including AC LED’s design, processing, packaging and applications. The goals are to expedite new product development and promote this burgeoning market together with industrial partners.
