ITRI Introduces Three Green Technologies Improving Emergency Water Sterilization, Industrial and Home Cleaning, and Textile Dyeing

ITRI introduces three green technologies: ITRI’s Portable UVC LED Water Sterilizer System is the world’s first solar-powered flow-water sterilizer that serves emergency purposes; the Energy-Saving Laser Descaling Agent Technology performs industrial and household surfaces cleaning without using water or chemical solvents, thus eliminating environmental pollution and health hazard; Functional Dyeing Synchronized with CO2 Supercritical Technology is a single-bath supercritical fluid dyeing (SFD) process for PET or blended elastic textiles, using supercritical carbon dioxide as the dyeing solvent instead of water, thereby eliminating water consumption and pollution and optimizing textile manufacturing since textiles no longer need drying. All three technologies are finalists for the 2018 R&D 100 Awards in the United States.

Portable UVC LED Water Sterilizer System

ITRI’s Portable UVC LED Water Sterilizer System is the world’s first solar-powered flow-water sterilizer for emergency use. It efficiently produces clean water by killing water-borne bacteria with ultraviolet-C (UVC) light-emitting diode (LED) technology. Unlike mercury lamp disinfection systems, ITRI’s sterilizer is mercury-free, energy-saving, compact, lightweight and durable.

The Portable UVC LED Water Sterilizer System is especially suitable for emergency situations lacking electricity, where it can provide clean water in an eco-friendly manner. Its backup battery can deliver 300 to 600 liters of sterilized water during night time. Compact and light, the sterilizer is easily distributed to disaster-affected areas, making rescues more efficient and reducing the risks of water-borne diseases such as diarrhea, malaria, and dengue fever. It also can be used in developing nations, where nearly 1,000 children under age five die every day due to diarrhea caused by contaminated water, poor sanitation, and improper hygiene.

ITRI developed the sterilizer using UVC LED and solar-power technology to improve on flow-water purification systems with mercury lamps, which easily overheat, have short lifespans, and whose power requirements exceed the capabilities of a small solar panel. The Portable UVC LED Water Sterilizer System satisfies the Minamata Convention on Mercury, a global environmental protection initiative phasing out the production, import and export of products containing mercury by the year 2020. UVC LEDs have advantages over mercury lamps such as lower power consumption, smaller carbon footprint, and instant on/off switching without warm-up.

The Portable UVC LED Water Sterilizer System uses 60 milliwatts (mW) ultraviolet (UV) light power to sterilize contaminated water. It can kill up to 99.9 percent of bacteria at a flow rate of two liters per minute (LPM). The system can be instantly activated whenever there is water flow, saving electricity. It also features a real-time self-monitoring system that indicates the disinfection status, UVC LED intensity, and battery status via a graphical user interface. Data can be saved in a memory device for review and analysis, and the system can connect with an Internet of Things (IoT) network for smart management and tracking.

Energy-Saving Laser Descaling Agent Technology

The Energy-Saving Laser Descaling Agent Technology performs industrial and household surfaces cleaning without using water or chemical solvents, thus eliminating environmental pollution and health hazard. It removes submicron particles/scales from a surface without harming the surface. Laser cleaning is an alternative to chemical cleaning for industrial and household applications, where it can be used to remove resin, oil, stains, filth, coating or plating, and oxidation layers. It requires no contact or grinding and can be applied to various types of materials. As laser processing becomes prevalent in industrial applications such as cutting, welding and cleaning, and excels in speed, quality and efficiency, ITRI’s Energy-Saving Laser Descaling Agent Technology provides another example and additional proof of lasers’ multi-dimensional and superior applications.

ITRI developed the Energy-Saving Laser Descaling Agent Technology mainly for environmental protection, to significantly reduce the amount of energy and chemical cleaning agents usage, protect water resources, decrease environmental pollution and stimulate sustainable development. The technology has high efficiency and low cost, is free of consumables and will not harm one’s skin with frequent house chores. In addition to avoiding the inconvenience of purchasing various cleaning agents or not knowing which kind to buy, it decreases the risk of accidental chemical substance exposure or inhalation from stored chemical cleaning agents.

The Energy-Saving Laser Descaling Agent Technology is composed of a pulsed fiber laser in a movable cart, together with a convenient and lightweight handheld laser cleaning head, which can be positioned to remove stains and rust marks at various angles. Residuals from cleaning are recycled through a vacuum system to prevent release of particles that cause health risks. It cleans many types of stains on different surfaces, including stains on kitchen and dining ware, bathroom tile mildew, wall mold, tap scale and rust corrosion on furniture.

The Energy-Saving Laser Descaling Agent Technology includes three safety mechanisms to prevent the laser from accidentally injuring human eyes: a 360-degree infrared cut-off protective shield prevents the laser from shining directly into human eyes; four sets of object sensors on all sides of the laser protective shield ensure the laser will only be activated when an object is within the cleaning zone; and the defocus divergence optical protective design ensures the laser will rapidly defocus and diverge after leaving the target zone and will be harmless when just five centimeters out of focus.

With a simple operating interface and lightweight handheld design, the technology is safe and easy-to-use, and cleaning is no longer time- and labor-consuming.
