The ITRI high performance octocopter is equipped with a high power density hybrid power unit and a dual propeller propulsion unit. The efficient hybrid power unit benefits from a lightweight aviation internal combustion engine and a compact integrated starter and generator (ISG). The drone can hover in the air for 45 minutes with a 30 kg payload, and a one-hour mission is achievable if the payload is decreased to 20 kg.

Applications & Benefits

Various applications are feasible with its low-altitude hovering capability under high payload conditions. For example, long range power grid inspection and even insulator cleaning missions will demonstrate the value of such utility drones. In precision agriculture, it is an asset in crop maintenance on both level and hilly terrain. In natural disaster prevention and rescue scenarios, it will perform well for emergency aid delivery and communication support.

ITRI is working with a Japanese drone manufacturer on software-hardware integration, a core development which will provide more robust flight performance. In the near future, the Taiwan drone application service and supply chain, which includes motors, propellers and control IC, will enter the international market.
