The 3D endoscope developed by ITRI can provide real 3D images without increasing the diameter of the endoscope, and help doctors to operate the surgery more easily.

In the process of minimally invasive surgery (MIS), medical endoscopy assists doctors to see the lesion clearly in a limited space, shortening the operation time, and improving the safety of MIS. However, MIS with a 2D endoscope is difficult to control the sense of distance due to lack of depth information. The doctor relies on empirical judgment during the operation, which causes additional burdens to the doctor and increases the risk of mistakes. The 3D endoscope developed by ITRI can provide real 3D images without increasing the diameter of the endoscope and help doctors to operate the surgery more easily. It is expected to extend the usage of 3D images in endoscopy. The 3D endoscope imaging module includes a main lens, microlens arrays, a sensor, and image processing software. After processing the image captured by the module, it can be output to a 3D display and converted into a stereoscopic image.
