Climate change and environmental pollution have become pressing global concerns. Many countries, including Taiwan, are mandating over a 50% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Solar reflective coatings are the only technology in the coatings industry that can actively contribute to energy savings and carbon reduction. These coatings prevent solar heat from transferring indoors, thereby reducing the need for air conditioning. As a result, they have become a major development trend among leading international paint manufacturers in recent years. It can also combine with the anti-corrosion coating technologies developed by ITRI, they offer dual functionality of solar reflection and corrosion protection.

Applications & Benefits

This technology is primarily applied to residential and commercial buildings to reduce indoor air conditioning usage. Initially, a demonstration house in Tainan was used to evaluate the solar reflective coating, achieving a temperature reduction of up to 9°C on cement-based materials and a 48% savings in air conditioning energy consumption.

Additionally, the technology has been integrated with anti-corrosion coatings for use on metal buildings. It has already been successfully applied in convenience stores and various office buildings, covering areas ranging from 250 to 2,500 square meters. The total annual electricity savings exceed 65,000 kWh, resulting in an annual carbon reduction of more than 32 metric tons of CO₂e.
