Technology Overview
CO2-Fixing Polycarbonate
ITRI and CHIMEI Corporation have jointly developed CO2-fixing polycarbonate (PC) technology to enable efficient recycling of carbon resources. The technology captures CO2 from CHIMEI's factory flue gas and converts it into PC resin using ITRI's reaction techniques. The solvents and catalysts involved in PC production are reusable, ensuring a toxin-free and environmentally friendly process. Compared to CHIMEI’s original process, the novel approach reduces carbon emissions by an estimated 1.19 kg for every kilogram of PC resin produced.
Applications & Benefits
CO2-fixing polycarbonate can be made into plastic products such as car headlight covers, charging piles, battery handles, and mobile phone cases. This mitigates environmental impact and contributes to the development of sustainable materials for a circular economy. The innovation was recognized by the 2024 R&D 100 Awards.
