High-Efficiency AEM Water Electrolysis and Ammonia-to-Hydrogen Conversion

Technology Overview

High-Efficiency AEM Water Electrolysis and Ammonia-to-Hydrogen Conversion strengthens the hydrogen supply chain.
High-Efficiency AEM Water Electrolysis and Ammonia-to-Hydrogen Conversion strengthens the hydrogen supply chain.

Hydrogen and ammonia are key solutions for deep decarbonization across the power, industrial, and transportation sectors. To build a stable hydrogen supply chain, ITRI has developed cost-competitive, high-performance technologies centered on nonprecious metal catalysts, gradient flow field stacks, and intelligent response control.

Applications & Benefits

On the production side, ITRI’s anion exchange membrane (AEM) water electrolysis system achieves ampere-level current density under lowconcentration operation, with stack volumetric power density approximately 30% higher than international benchmarks. The system is being integrated with Taiwan’s hydrogen suppliers for deployment. For hydrogen carrier application, ITRI has developed a high-efficiency ammonia-to-hydrogen conversion system featuring a medium-temperature, nonprecious cobalt-based catalyst. The ammonia conversion rate reaches 99.6% at 550 °C. With performance approaching that of global leaders at much lower material cost, field validation in the steel and chemical industries is underway to support a localized ammonia-to-hydrogen value chain.
