ITRI works to improve WiMAX/Wi-Fi broadband system integrated service and has provided WiMAX service coverage to Taiwan’s 345 km-long High Speed Rail. Based on the self-developed Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) antenna technology, the Lab integrates communications technologies, such as Wi-Fi, WiMAX, Radio-Over-Fiber (RoF), Multicasting, to provide a WiMAX and Radio over Fiber (RoF) for ground-train communication, even within tunnels, and Wi-Fi for inter/intra-car communication.
After completing the installation of optical-fiber cables, WiMAX stations, and WiMAX/LTE RoF equipment in the tunnels we provided a WiMAX/LTE broadband internet access services trial operation and a multimedia live TV applications services with Wi-Fi multicast streaming features on the trains.
Applications & Benefits
Looking into the future, the experience on the WiMAX/Wi-Fi broadband system integrated service can be applied to public transport systems all over the world, and the wireless multicasting technology can be applied to large-scale events or integrate with Over-the-top (OTT) IPTV services to provide on-line learning. The technology contains a huge business potential.
