Technology Overview
Renewable energy (RE) and electric vehicles (EVs) are two key elements in achieving the goal of net zero emissions by 2050. As the RE penetration rate increases, so does the impact of RE intermittency on the grid. Implementing energy storage systems (ESS) can ease the problem by absorbing the instability. However, lithium-based batteries have safety concerns if safety design and quality control are not well considered. To solve these problems, ITRI has assisted the Government to establish an ESS safety certification scheme and certification capacities.
Applications & Benefits
The scheme is accredited by both the Taiwan Accreditation Foundation and government authority, serving the ESS industry and assuring the system safety. In the meantime, the Taiwanese government has outlined a schedule for EV deployment, aiming for a 100% EV market by 2040. Traditional gas stations will be replaced by charging stations, and car owners will pay for their mileages based on the amount of electrical charge they use. To ensure fair trade in the charging market, ITRI is also helping the government establish an electric vehicle service equipment (EVSE) validation scheme and testing capacities.
