Technology Overview
ITRI developed an innovative solar cell technology named Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contact Plus (TOPCon+) that can be produced by upgrading existing passivated emitter and rear cell (PERC) production lines. TOPCon+ can significantly reduce interfacial recombination between the substrate and electrode by employing an ultra-thin oxide layer and a polycrystalline silicon layer for backside passivation, which incorporates shingled PV modules that expand the power generation area per module unit. By integrating the existing conductive welding ribbon process with buffer materials, manufacturers can readily adopt this upgrade using current cell tabber stringers.
Applications & Benefits
This shingled technology enhances module efficiency by 0.5% compared to traditional modules. Beyond the mainstream PERC modules, TOPCon+ technology demands 10% less land area and delivers higher power generation efficiency in high-temperature and low-illumination environments.
