Innovative Regulation Technology for Microalgae Growth

Technology Overview

Microalgae culturing has great potential in carbon capture and sequestration (CCS). With a fixation capacity of 1.8-2 kilograms of carbon per kilogram, microalgae are a good source for biofuel, along with a handful of high-value substances, such as astaxanthin. Moreover, the extraction residue is good animal feedstuff. In cooperation with domestic businesses, ITRI has demonstrated a pilot algae culturing farm for CCS and bio-substance production, utilizing the active compounds ITRI-G1 and ITRI-A1 to regulate the algal cultivation. ITRI-A1 is a photoautotrophic growth stimulating agent and ITRI-GI is a cell disruption stimulating agent that can activate an algal defense mechanism to increase the production of high-value bio-substances. With ITRI’s innovative regulation technology, the cell growth rate shows a threefold increase. A corresponding 1.95- fold increase in astaxanthin productivity has been demonstrated in one-pot cultivation of Haematococcus pluvialis.

Astaxanthin liposomes, water-soluble micrometer-sized particulates for high skin permeability, can be used in products like facial masks and body lotions. The biological mechanisms involved in the stimulation of algae growth have been verified, including nitrogen utilization and chlorophyll increase. The technology is applicable to commercial culturing of various photosynthesizing algae. ITRI has been working with the industry to set up acre-scale Haematococcus pluvialis culturing farms for the business development of astaxanthin products.
