Technology Overview
Demand is surging for 5G upgrades in emerging markets, network deployment in rural areas, urban hotspot expansion, and private network extension to large venues such as airports, seaports, and hospitals. To address these needs, ITRI has developed Taiwan’s first independent micro-cell base station system. This system incorporates key technologies such as massive multiple-input multiple-output (Massive MIMO) modules and high-power modules and control. This has enhanced Taiwan’s R&D capabilities for high-power and multiantenna base stations, meeting the requirements for large coverage areas, high capacity, interoperability, and integration.
Applications & Benefits
Unlike the small cell product development currently predominant in Taiwan’s network communication industry, this 5G O-RAN micro-cell base station system overcomes challenges including heat dissipation, signal distortion, and beamforming. This technology has been transferred to manufacturers for productization and is actively entering the international ecosystem.
