Before starting work at ITRI in April 2010, I had met some people from ITRI at international conferences while I was working at Samsung Electronics. When my wife and I decided to move to this island, I applied at ITRI and got a position in Information & Communication Labs.
Before coming to Taiwan one of my major concerns was food. I am a vegetarian and don’t eat eggs. On the first day visit to ITRI cafeteria, it was a pleasant surprise to find four separate food counters serving different vegetarian food!
I’m able to start my own research project and take on different roles. Currently my work is related to 4G systems, and also involves standardization participation. Besides, I’m involved in a research project on power-saving for small wireless devices.
Here one finds a wide range of technologies and experts concentrated in one location. There are plenty of possibilities for cross-domain innovation. ITRI’s proximity to two excellent universities gives an opportunity to collaborate with many world-class professors. Utilizing this convenience, ITRI employees often join open courses, seminars and workshops organized regularly at these universities.
As far as work-life balance, I do work extra hours sometimes, particularly when an important deadline approaches, but in general the workload is quite reasonable. There are several recreational and other on-campus facilities, including swimming pool, baseball field, gym, tennis court, badminton court, convenience shops, kindergarten, dormitories, bank, post-office, etc. I could also utilize one of the available studio rooms to practice Raja Yoga-meditation.
