Software Engineer

Hometown: Tomsk, Russia

I first came to ITRI in the summer of 2013 for a 4-month internship.  I was a PhD student at Tomsk State University of Control Systems & Radioelectronics, our university has some cooperation with ITRI on internships. I saw the message advertising internships at ITRI, did some research and found that Taiwan is a rich modern country with lots of famous high-tech companies such as Acer and HTC. I had wanted to explore Asia a little and this seemed like a good opportunity.  I also thought it would be good to learn Chinese for my future career.  I did a 4-month internship during which I worked very hard, they assigned me a project and I was able to get some good preliminary results; at the end they invited me to join ITRI as a regular employee so I could complete the project. I joined at the beginning of 2014.

I work in ICL's cloud computing team; my work is mainly writing software for the virtual machine (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure).  Specifically I’m working on the problem of video optimization, how to reduce the bandwidth used during transfer of video files.  The goal is to develop and patent some new techniques that can be licensed to existing companies or possibly to a new spin-off company.  It is mainly a solo project so mostly I work by myself, although we do have regular group meetings.  I like working in ICL, there is a good atmosphere.  Our General Director Chiueh is great to work for.  The work hours are fine, I don’t often work overtime.

I live in the ITRI dormitory right on campus, which is cheap and very convenient, I just have a 5 minute walk across campus to and from work.  I use ITRI’s recreation center all the time, for playing pool, ping-pong or other games, or to go for a swim and use the saunas.  The ITRI campus is a little bit far from downtown Hsinchu, but I got my license and bought a scooter so I don’t always have to rely on the bus.  I’m taking Chinese classes at nearby National Chiao-Tung University, it’s not easy but I don’t think it’s the hardest language to learn either.  I have met many people who have lived in Taiwan for several years without learning Chinese, so it is possible to survive here without it.

As far as living in Taiwan, I like the mild climate here (compared to Russia that is).  The quality of living and infrastructure is very good, I mean for example things like roads and public transportation. On the weekends I go out with friends, sometimes there is an outdoor festival or other activity, sometimes we go to Taipei and go to some of the clubs.  It’s also cheap to visit other countries from here, I’ve been to Thailand recently and am going to Vietnam soon.

Note: Dmitry left ITRI in 2021 to pursue another opportunity in Taipei.
