I came to Taiwan in 2014 for a master program in National Chiao Tung University. The university organized several career fairs where I learned about ITRI and its R&D function in Taiwan. I was automatically drawn to that. I graduated in 2016 and started a career in ITRI’s ICL department.

I am mainly responsible for working on projects that connect Europe and Taiwan. Currently I am working on European projects dealing with 5G leveraging the use of SDN, NFV and MEC technologies. ITRI sends me to Europe every Quarter to attend the project meetings. I enjoy the living environment here in Taiwan and in ITRI as the people are very friendly and the work is very challenging and interesting. What I like most about ITRI is its flexibility. If you have a good idea, it can be supported with budget and projects. Also, ITRI is very supportive of its spin offs, thus really encouraging creativity and challenges for its employees. As of the language, I don’t find language barrier as a main challenge in my career as I mostly deal with international business and workers. Chinese is a bonus but not a necessity if you’re working in ITRI.

I have a suggestion for anyone looking for a position in ITRI, is to apply for the summer internship first. ITRI organizes summer internship event every year. It is recommended for the students to take part in such events. Also another option for those studying in Taiwan is to apply in the open houses organized by ITRI in universities.

I find the environment in ITRI is very friendly and supportive. I really recommend ITRI as a place to start your career, the R&D facility is fantastic and there’s a lot of opportunities for you to carry out the research in relevant field.

Note: Shahzoob left ITRI in November, 2018 to take a position in Taipei.
